ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System
What Is ISO 9000?
ISO 9000 is a family of standards that defines the fundamental concepts and common terminology used to establish and improve quality management. These standards help organizations provide products and services consistently and in line with customer expectations. The first standards in the ISO 9000 series were published in 1987.
What Does ISO Stand For?
ISO is an international standardization organization headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. Its name is not an acronym formed from the initials of “International Organization for Standardization.” To avoid using different abbreviations in different languages, the organization adopted ISO, derived from the Greek word isos, meaning “equal.”
The Difference Between ISO 9000 and ISO 9001
The ISO 9000 family includes several standards related to quality management systems. ISO 9000 explains the fundamental concepts and terminology, while ISO 9001 specifies the requirements an organization must meet for its quality management system. ISO 9001 is the standard used for certification.
A quality management system based on ISO 9001 involves understanding customer needs, defining business processes, clarifying roles and responsibilities, monitoring results, and carrying out improvement activities. Organizations in many sectors can adapt the system to their operations, including manufacturers, service providers, and public institutions.
Benefits of the ISO 9000 Family
When effectively implemented, a quality management system can help an organization operate more consistently and identify opportunities for improvement. Its main benefits include:
- Helps organizations better understand customer expectations and improve customer satisfaction.
- Supports the definition, standardization, and regular monitoring of business processes.
- Helps reduce errors, waste, and rework.
- Clarifies employees’ duties, authority, and responsibilities.
- Reduces dependence on individual employees by encouraging consistent ways of working.
- Supports the organized management of documents and historical records.
- Makes it easier to select, assess, and monitor suppliers.
- Encourages decisions based on data, measurements, and analysis.
- Helps build quality awareness throughout the organization.
- Can contribute to higher productivity and better cost control.
- Supports trust and a stronger reputation among customers and business partners.
- Helps demonstrate that quality management expectations are being addressed in domestic and international markets.
An ISO 9001 certificate shows that an organization’s quality management system has been audited against the relevant standard. The benefits depend not only on obtaining the certificate, but also on applying the defined processes in day-to-day operations and improving them regularly.
